Our Services
At Hammerhead Piano Tuning and Repair, we want to provide you with the best value for the money you invest in maintaining your instrument. We work with you to determine what kind of work makes sense for your piano and your budget.
If you are not sure what needs doing, we can give free advice over the phone or email, or conduct an in-person assessment of the piano for a call-out fee of £60.
A surcharge may be added to the bill for customers located more than 45 minutes away by car.
Tuning and Minor Repairs
From £90
Fine tuning the piano to concert pitch (A4=440Hz). Ideally this should be done every six months, with discounts offered for frequent tunings or multiple pianos.
Pianos that are too far below concert pitch may require a pitch raise before they can be fine tuned. For more information on pitch raises, see this detailed explanation provided by the Piano Technician’s Guild.
Pre-purchase Inspection and Valuation
From £100 per piano
Sadly, many fall into the trap of picking up a cheap or free piano that has been listed on an online marketplace, only to discover that - after potentially paying hundreds to have it moved in - the piano cannot hold a tune or is otherwise unserviceable.
Whether you are buying second hand from a retailer or picking up a ‘free’ piano of dubious origins, it is important to have a technician check the piano for faults and issues that might require expensive repairs down the line.
We can also accompany you to showroom appointments to help you compare different models and buy with confidence.
Servicing and Regulation
Full day from £500
The full day service can include, but is not limited to: replacing worn felts, fixing sticking notes, refacing hammers, voicing and regulation, tightening loose tuning pins.
Materials are included where possible, unless the work involves replacing an entire set of a particular part.
Cleaning
From £100
Pianos should be deep cleaned every 3-5 years to monitor and prevent mould or pest issues.
Moths in particular are prone to laying eggs in the piano’s felts, requiring costly repairs and regulation.
We can get to those hard to reach nooks and crannies without damaging the delicate action parts or hoovering up the felt washers.
There may be additional charges for pianos that are exceptionally dirty or contain signs of rodent activity.
